GAME TWO IN TAMPA: After a successful start to the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 2-0 win against Canada in Detroit, the U.S. headed south to Tampa, Fla., to prepare to face Panama on Saturday, June 11, at Raymond James Stadium. Group C’s first-place position is up for grabs as Panama was 3-2 winners against Guadeloupe in Tuesday’s other match and currently sits in second place behind the U.S. on goal differential. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. ET and the match will be broadcast live on FOX Soccer, TeleFutura, CONCACAF.com and univision.com. SIGHTS ON SECOND ROUND: The U.S.-Panama match is the second of a double header that begins with Canada facing Guadeloupe at 6 p.m. ET. If Canada gets at least one point in the match against Guadeloupe, then a U.S. win against Panama would secure a top-two finish in the group and assure the team of quarterfinal berth after two games.

Soccer team that represents Guatemala in international matches and it falls under the direct command of Federacion Nacional de Futbol de Guatemala. Association Football was established in 1919 became a member of the CONCACAF and it became a FIFA associate in 1946.
Even though the team did not qualify even once for the World Cup, it did make three Olympic game appearances in return. They were able to participate in the 1968 Olympics, 1976 and then managed to enter the Olympics game again in 1988.
Their highest achievement to date is the UNCAF Nations Cup where they became champion in 2001. Guatemala also won the 1967 3rd CONCACAF Championship. They emerged as fourth placer in the 1996 run of CONCACAF Gold Cup and it was considered as the team’s top performance. Another good performance of the team that brought them a silver medal was in 1983 at the Pan American Games held in Caracas, Venezuela....

GUATEMALA CITY – The president of a soccer team whose second-in-command was killed two days ago has also received threats apparently related to the club’s poor performance, Guatemalan police said Sunday.
Carmelino Hidalgo, a spokeswoman for police in the northern province of Huehuetenango, said Xinabajul club president Mauro Rodriguez reported receiving threats – as did vice president Carlos Noe Gomez, who was ambushed and shot to death by two men Friday as he left a team meeting.
Xinabajul had been at the bottom of the Guatemalan league, but beat leader Heredia 1-0 on Saturday to climb out of the basement. Rodriguez did not attend the match.
Hidalgo said Rodriguez is receiving protection, but did not specify what measures were being taken to protect him.
